What is breath work?

Updated: Aug 26, 2020

We all need to breathe, right? So why is everyone talking about the amazing transformational power of simply breathing?

Breathwork is the term used to describe practices involving taking conscious control of the breath. This concept has existed for hundreds of years but has developed since the 1960s into its own practice, combining influences from ancient Eastern healing, such as yoga, and Western healing, such as psychotherapy. Breathwork benefits the mind, body and spirit, helping people to transform physical, mental & emotional challenges, connecting more deeply within.

The incredible power & beauty of Breathwork is that it’s available to you wherever you are – at all times! A tool that can heal mind, body and spirit. It can be used for many different things, such as:

- Processing emotions and healing trauma

- Treating anxiety-related conditions, depression and chronic pain

- Dealing with stress and negative emotions

- Boosting creativity

- Aiding the immune system

- Helping relationships

- Finding clarity

Practising breathwork can yield results that you may never have expected…

The practice itself usually involves continuous, rhythmic breathing for up to an hour. The aim is to give your full attention to your breath, following it around your body. The breath has so much more capacity than simply keeping us alive, it can heal and allow us to connect with ourselves on an emotional and spiritual level. People experience breathwork in different ways. On the physical side, you might feel tingling sensations, lightness or heaviness, or energy flowing through your body. Scientific research into breathwork has shown that it can create a feeling of calm by activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which slows your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure. It can further relax your body by reversing the fight or flight response that floods your body with stress hormones. This brings balance to your stress response system, which can greatly help those who suffer with anxiety and PTSD. Finally, deep breathing relies on the diaphragm, relieving pressure from the chest, which allows your muscles to relax.

Breathwork can also produce a strong emotional response by allowing you to connect with yourself and access a deeper state of mind. This access and connection can help to unearth buried feelings, traumas and experiences, and therefore provide you with the means to confront and resolve these emotions, freeing your mind from these burdens. The practice can also bring clarity and a sense of alertness to many people, as well as providing them with a greater connected between mind and body.

Breath work is a powerful spiritual gateway.

When you practice, you can move beyond your body and mind, and connect with your core spirit—your Self . Tapping into & awakening within you - an unlimited energy/resource that is simply connected to & part of everything. This connection is life changing. Many people who practice breathwork experience spiritual awakenings or attunements to their inner being.
